Quantum mechanics is not (just) about microscopic physics. Indeed, topological insulators are macroscopic systems that exhibit exact integer and rational quantization in their measurable properties, independently of their microscopic details. I will explain some new mathematical results in "coarse geometry" and "large-scale index theory", which arose from trying to understand "macroscopic quantization". I will also give a "consistent symmetry-breaking" perspective of this story.
